Having served as a Florida Supreme Court Justice since 2009, Justice James E.C. Perry has retired from Florida’s highest court at the age of 72. Initially appointed to the court by Gov. Charlie Christ, Perry was Florida’s 85th Supreme Court Justice. Now, his time as a Supreme Court Justice has come to a close not necessarily by choice, but because the maximum age of a Supreme Court Justice in Florida is 70. However, thanks to detailed laws, Perry was able to stay on for an additional two years because his birthday passed in the later half of his six-year term. Inspired at the age of 24 to make a positive difference through the legal field, Judge Perry will forever be remembered for his strong dissent on a death-sentence ruling, his belief in upholding the spirit of the law, and his work with children’s community centers and sports associations.
