What You Can do to Help Your Court Reporter

Making Things Easier for Your Orlando Court Reporters

Accurate transcriptions make a world of difference for a client’s case. By helping your court reporter with these easy tips, you are ensuring that your court reporters have each and every detail correct for your transcript. Here’s what you can do:

Provide Correct Spelling of Uncommon, Important Words

The court reporting machine, or the stenograph, records phonetically. Because of this, court reporters have to type up the transcript in “English” following the legal proceedings. If a court reporter is familiar with a certain word or phrase, however, it may be incorrectly typed up, leading to potential confusion. Before the deposition, it is extremely helpful to present your court reporter with a list of key words, phrases, and/or names that may cause confusion and, as a result, a spelling error.

Clearly Enunciate

Court reporters can type sometimes over 200 words per minute. While the speed allows them to keep up in the court room, they can only keep up due to their human senses. If a witness or attorney speaks too quickly, mumbles, or speaks over another person, a court reporter will have extreme difficulty recording what precisely was said. Make sure you speak clearly and are mindful of the speech of others.

Use Complete Words, Not Inarticulate Sounds

In every day speech, we often use inarticulate sounds to convey meaning, such as “uh-huh” and “uh-uh” to mean “yes” and “no.” This is fine in person, but in writing, it can be difficult to discern what exactly the speaker meant. If a witness uses one of these sounds, ask for clarification so that everything can be accurately recorded for later use.
